How We Turn an Empty Field Into a Festival

Most people only see an event once the stage is ready, the marquees are dressed and the first guests begin to arrive. But long before that, there’s a huge amount of planning, building and coordination happening behind the scenes.

For Free Fest, it all starts here — with an empty field.

STARTING WITH A BLANK CANVASS

From site layout and marquees to staging, lighting, seating and all the little details that bring an event together, every part of the build has to happen in the right order.

Building the Event Site

Once the layout is agreed, the build begins. Marquees, staging and infrastructure all need to be positioned carefully so the site works for visitors, performers, suppliers and the team running the event.

What looks like an empty field quickly starts to become a working event space.

Stage, Lighting & Infrastructure

An event site needs much more than marquees. Staging, lighting, power and technical equipment all have to be installed safely and in the right place before the event can come to life.

This is the point where the field starts to feel less like a build site and more like a festival.

Bringing It All Together

Once the main structures and technical elements are in place, the finishing touches start to transform the site. Seating, signage, lighting, decoration and layout all help turn the build into a space that feels ready for people to arrive.

By this stage, the empty field is starting to look like a real event.

Ready for the Crowd

Once the structures, stage, lighting and site dressing are in place, the build starts to disappear and the event itself takes over.

That’s the aim: by the time the first visitors arrive, everything should feel ready, welcoming and effortless — even though a huge amount of work has gone into getting it there.
